Major Hollyoaks legend diagnosed with cancer

Mercedes removes her wig in Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Monday’s (September 16) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on at 7pm.

Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) is set to face the challenge of her life as the latest offering of the serial confirmed that she’s got cancer.

The much-loved TV legend removed a wig during the episode in question, which featured the long-awaited one-year time jump, confiding in Leela Dexter (Kirsty Leigh Porter) and Grace Black (Tamara Wall) about how tough she’s finding life.

Hollyoaks, as fans know, has reduced its episodes from five a week to three, with a number of key – and I mean key – cast members having been axed in order to facilitate the change.

In a bid to mark this new era, show bosses decided to take a historic time jump, moving the action one year into the future following the chaotic stunt week, which claimed the lives of numerous favourites.

Mercedes was forced to say goodbye to one true love Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas), who fled the village after the death of Blue – aka handyman Dave Williams (Dominic Power).

One year on from that fateful day and life couldn’t be more complicated for the legendary soap icon as she faces her biggest challenge yet in the form of cancer – in addition to having to raise one-year-old twins.

Leela and Grace were quick to check in on her after an engagement party at Casa McQueen, with the trio having apparently become close in the missing year.

Elsewhere in the village, Leah Barnes (Ela-May Demircan) gave birth – yes, really – and Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) regained consciousness, having been in a coma for over a year. Again, yes really!

Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) is engaged to one true love Ethan Williams (Matthew James Bailey) – finally! – and Cleo McQueen (Nadine Mulkerrin) is being kept prisoner by evil Abe Fielding (Tyler Conti), who is secretly seeing Peri Lomax (Ruby O’Donnell).

I guess time really does change everything!

Hollyoaks streams Mondays to Wednesdays from 7am on Channel 4’s streaming platform, or catch episodes on TV at 7pm on E4.
