Chicago Fire promo puts Brett’s career (and her freedom) in jeopardy
The character is getting into some serious trouble in season 12.
Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) doesn’t need more added to her plate, but she’s going to get it anyway. The promo for the upcoming episode of Chicago Fire, “On the Hook”, drops the character into a nightmare scenario in which she may accidentally contribute to the death of a victim.
The title of the episode is pretty grim, especially when one realizes that Brett is the person who is “on the hook” for her actions. The promo suggests that something goes wrong when Brett tries to use a defibrillator on a teen who collapsed during a basketball game, but is unable to because the device doesn’t work.
Brett potentially jeopardizes a man’s life
Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) is understandably perplexed by what happened, and then the promo shows us a very tense exchange between Brett and Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker). The latter explains that the teen is unresponsive, and thinks that the device’s malfunction may have been the result of “human error.”
Brett then comes to the sobering realization that she will be liable for what happened if “human error” turns out to be the legal cause of what happened. Not only would the ruling severely harm her career, but the character could be facing legal consequences, depending on whether the man pulls through.
This could have happened at worse time for Brett, given that she has less than a month left before she gets married to Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) and moves to Oregon to live happily ever after.
It’s possible that an investigation into what happened could detain the character, and perhaps even lead to the wedding being delayed.
Brett could face investigation as a result
This is the sort of complication that Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman teased during a recent interview with Looper. When asked whether it would be smooth sailing for Brett and Casey in the lead up to the wedding, the showrunner revealed:
“There are plans in place that go awry. Things don’t go exactly how anyone thinks it’s going to go.”
There hadn’t been much in terms of plans going awry thus far, beyond the stress over finding a venue or making sure that the right people got wedding invitations, but making a potentially life-threatening mistake on the job is serious as can be, and Brett is going to have to pray that “human error” is not the cause of what happened on that basketball court.
