The new trailer for Chicago Fire season 12 reveals a look at Taylor Kinney’s Kelly Severide in his anticipated return following a sudden departure.

Chicago Fire: Taylor Kinney's final episode revealed? All we know | HELLO!

A new trailer for Chicago Fire season 12 hints at the return of Kelly Severide. Played by actor Taylor Kinney, Severide was last seen in the middle of Chicago Fire season 11. The series returns on Wednesday, January 17 on NBC, with production now underway following the delays caused by the writers and actors strikes.

In the joint teaser trailer for Chicago MedChicago Fire, and Chicago P.D., NBC offers just snippets of the different shows and their new episodes. The end of the trailer gives a look at Kinney’s return to his role as Kelly Severide.

Kinney was last seen as Severide in Chicago Fire season 11, episode 14, “Run Like Hell.” The actor was originally expected to appear throughout the entirety of season 11, but ended up having to take a leave of absence from the show for undisclosed reasons. As a result, the writers ended up explaining away Severide’s absence by saying that he was away at arson training.

This hasty write-off was an easy way for the Chicago Fire writers to take Severide out of the show temporarily while still leaving the opportunity for him to return. In late October, it was confirmed that Kinney would indeed be returning to Chicago Fire for at least the beginning of season 12. With Kinney having been a key character within the One Chicago universe for over 200 episodes, he is one of the most popular actors on the show. There was some confusion and outcry when he first departed, so it is safe to say his return will be welcomed by many.

Even with the release of the trailer, there are still few specifics available regarding Severide’s return to Firehouse 51. Recent Chicago Fire set photos showed Kinney posing with some fire trucks, but still kept it vague as to how the firefighter would fit into the season’s plot. Furthermore, Kinney has only been confirmed to return for the beginning of season 12, and it has not yet been revealed whether he will be a season regular. NBC pushing Kinney in the trailer, however, is hopefully a good sign that Kelly Severide might be here to stay in Chicago Fire season 12.
