Chicago PD star clarifies Burzek’s future: ‘The bait and switch is over’

We’re entering a new, unprecedented phase of Burzek’s romance.

Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) have not have the smoothest romantic trajectory. There’s been two attempted engagements, a few break ups, and a lot of debate as to whether they were good for one another or better as friends.

Well, the uncertainty has dissipated in the current season of Chicago PD. The couple got closer than ever in the last year and a half, culminating with Ruzek proposing to Burgess for a third (and hopefully final time).

Some fans may be skeptical that the couple have turned over a new leaf, but Marina Squerciati sees it differently. The actress told NBC that the days of Burgess and Ruzek being unsure, and going back and forth with what they want, are over:

“The bait and switch for Ruzek and Burgess are over. They’ll go through stuff, but they’re together now. They’re the couple that we rely on.””

It’s a relief to know that the couple are going to be in a more stable place moving forward, even if they will continue to encounter difficulties on the job.

There was some concern on the part of fans that the Burzek dynamic would resemble that of Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), but the separation not only gives the former duo some distinctness, but it keeps PD from becoming stale.

Nobody wanted to see another instance of a marriage falling apart, and Squerciati told the outlet that the struggles that Burgess and Ruzek take on individually will be something they continue to support each other through. The support system is, evidently, strong as ever:

“They’re each going to go through things as one does in life and in marriage. But we’re safe. I think we’re safe.”

Chicago PD is in desperate need of a successful romance, given the aforementioned Halstead and Upton divorce, as well as the fact that the closest rookie Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) has gotten to romance has been hooking up with an informant.

Wedding bells are around the corner for Burzek, and we can’t wait to see where things go from there.
