Co-showrunner Andrea Newman clarifies what happens to Hermann after the Chicago Fire season 12 premiere and teases how it impacts Firehouse 51.
Chicago Fire co-showrunner Andrea Newman teases Hermann’s fate after the events of the season 12 premiere will have ramifications. One Chicago returns after an extended hiatus due to the dual Hollywood strikes of 2023. Aside from tackling the cliffhangers set in the Chicago Fire season 11 finale, it also introduced new storylines that will impact the rest of season 12. One of the bigger new arcs in season 12 is Hermann’s state after his heroic save from an arsonist. On the heels of the foiled bombing, he appears unscathed but, later on, is found by Ritter, seemingly still shaken by what happened to him.
Talking to TV Insider, Newman reveals that there’s more to Hermann’s situation. The showrunner teases potential consequences that could mean someone getting hurt, depending on how Hermann deals with it. Read her full quote below:
“Change is the theme of the season, and Herrmann has his own upheaval both mentally and physically coming off that heroic save. The question is, can Ritter get him to confront the truth of his struggles, or will Herrmann end up getting himself or someone else hurt by not dealing with it? And how will that dynamic affect the Herrmann/Ritter relationship going forward? Wait, who’s asking the questions here?”

Will Hermann Leave Chicago Fire In Season 12
Between the nature of their jobs and how long the show is on the air, Chicago Fire has seen its fair share of character exits and entrances. While character exits are disappointing, the circumstances allow One Chicago to keep things fresh and interesting with new characters, resulting in new stories to tell. Chicago Fire season 12 already has a few exits, with Gallo already bidding farewell and Brett set to follow. Meanwhile, there are theories that Severide will also leave Firehouse 51.
Considering all these factors, Hermann will likely stay with Firehouse 51, at least throughout Chicago Fire season 12, but his journey won’t be easy. With Mouch officially out of the woods, the other veteran member of Chief Boden’s squad going through a near-death experience may be too much. However, the way they set up his future arc makes sense for a firefighter; what will make this story intriguing is the way it will impact the rest of his squadmates.
Hermann’s Chicago Fire season 12 challenges will coincide with a year of changes for Chief Boden and his team, as teased by Newman. Aside from personnel reshuffling due to several cast exits, the dynamic at Firehouse 51 will also drastically be altered. More than Hermann possibly leaving, there’s a higher chance that changes are coming his way in terms of his role in the team.
