Hollyoaks confirms twist in groundbreaking storyline never been done before in UK soap

Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) will give birth to her twins in Hollyoaks this summer and it doesn’t take long for her to come up with the perfect names for her little bundles of joy.

The former landlady of The Dog in the Pond, as fans know, discovered that she was pregnant with twins earlier this year, with the bigger shock being that the unborn babies have two different dads.

This phenomenon, known as Heteropaternal superfecundation, is super rare in humans, though a number of cases have been documented, and it has never been dramatised in a UK soap before.

Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) is father to one of her babies while Felix Westwood (Richard Blackwood) is dad to the other.

Mercedes, as fans know, had been having an affair with Warren while engaged to Felix.

The matriarch will welcome her babies this summer, with Hollyoaks’ official Summer Trailer confirming such a thing, as she goes into labour in new restaurant Casa McQueen, with Warren on hand to deliver the little tots.

A special extended scene confirms the twins’ safe arrival, with Mercedes and Warren enjoying a loved up moment on the village’s signature bridge.

When quizzed about the names of her babies, Mercedes reveals that she has indeed made her choices.

‘For Felix’s little girl, I was thinking Maria Carmella’, which is a touching tribute to her sister Carmel McQueen, who tragically died in 2014.

And as for Warren’s baby? Maria Gabriella, in honour of Mercy’s stillborn son Gabriel.

Warren was intrigued by the repetition of Maria. ‘It’s a good strong Catholic girl name’, replied Mercedes.

Mercedes and Warren appear to be back on track romantically, but time is running out for the two, with Warren set to exit in an incredibly dramatic fashion.

Filming pictures of an on-location shoot confirms that Warren is stabbed amid the ongoing mysterious Blue storyline, but will he make it out of the village alive?

Hollyoaks streams weeknights at 7:30pm on Channel 4’s streaming platform, or catch episodes on TV at 7pm on E4.
