Hollyoaks legend declared ‘dead’ after much-loved couple ‘reunite’

Sienna Blake confronts Ethan Williams in the market in Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Wednesday’s (June 19) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on Thursday June 20 at 7pm.

Ethan Williams (Matthew James Bailey) had a bone to pick Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) after they crossed paths for the first time in months.

The former couple, known to their loyal and devoted fans as Ethenna, went their separate ways last year after a whirlwind romance, much to the devastation of their aforementioned fanbase who had hoped for a long-term future.

The pair’s downfall was directly linked to Sienna’s obsession with conning millionaire Rafe Harcourt (Chris Gordon) out of his fortune.

Despite the harebrained scheme actually being his idea, Ethan started to suspect that Sienna was falling for Rafe and therefore tried to put the brakes on the plan.

Sienna, however, refused to cut ties with Rafe, adamant that getting her hands on the Earl’s fortune would secure her and her children’s future, with Ethan therefore declaring their relationship over.

As is often the case with soap, fans simply expected Ethan and Sienna to gravitate back towards one another after the Rafe story wrapped up, but flash-forward almost a year and the characters have had little interaction since, with Sienna now embroiled in a brand new storyline while much-loved Ethan hasn’t had much to do.

That all changed tonight, however, with the former flames sharing a scene for the first time in months as Sienna confronted Ethan in the market shortly after setting up her flower stall, berating him for feigning illness while Dilly (Emma Johnsey-Smith) worked a shift at The Loft in his absence.

Ethan was baffled by such a claim, revealing that it was his day off and that Dilly isn’t working either, which led Sienna to realise that her sister was up to something.

In a bid to find out what that something is, Sienna tasked Ethan with looking after her brand new stall.

Dilly, as viewers know, is keen to connect with estranged grandma Martha (Sherrie Hewson), despite Sienna pleading with her to steer clear of her.

Much like Sienna suspected, Martha is not be trusted but this proved to be the least of Dilly’s concerns when she set her sights on newcomer Jeremy (Jeremy Sheffield), who bears a striking resemblance to dead dad Patrick.

Ethan, meanwhile, wasn’t best pleased with Sienna for commandeering his day off, as he vented to Liberty Savage (Jessamy Stoddart) about Sienna, ahem, taking liberties.

‘I’ve been stood here like a mug for three hours!’, he exclaimed. ‘I’ve had a pensioner ask me on a date, I’ve had a woman moaning about her droopy dahlias and… I’ve had the local crank asked me how bushy my foliage was!’

Liberty was full of praise for Ethan, reiterating that – thanks to him – Sienna is a ‘stonking success’ on her first day in the flower business.

But Ethan simply didn’t share her enthusiasm. ‘No she’s not,’ he responded about his ex-lover. ‘She’s dead!’

Actual couple goals.

Now that Ethan and Sienna are interacting on screen again, the big question is: can fans expect to see them reuniting? I certainly hope so and I know I’m not alone, with actress Anna Passey also keen for them to get back together, telling me that the show should ‘give the fans what they want’.

‘We’ve had such a rest from Ethan and Sienna now and the audience are still looking out for it,’ she told Metro.co.uk. ‘They’re thinking “That wasn’t really resolved, was it?”

‘I don’t think Ethan and Sienna ever came to a good, peaceful parting and I know that they both absolutely still have feelings for each other.

‘I think Sienna doesn’t think it fits with what she’s looking for and maybe Ethan thinks too much water has gone under the bridge – but with that said I still think they could find a way to reunite. Deep down they really care for each other!’

If a reunion is on the cards, it will likely be short-lived one, with Metro.co.uk understanding that actor Matthew James Bailey will soon exit the show after three years.

I know, I’m not over it either.

Hollyoaks streams weeknights at 7:30pm on Channel 4’s streaming platform, or catch episodes on TV at 7pm on E4.
