The Chicago Fire romance nobody accepted (including the actors)
Kara Killmer was as unconvinced by this subplot as the rest of us at home.
Chicago Fire has cycled through just about every romantic combination you can think of. Some of them worked out great, some of them are still working out great, and others were, let’s say, a miss. We’ve already run through some of the most bizarre workplace romances in the show’s history, but there’s one that fans balked at from the beginning:
Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Dylan (Christopher Allen).
Brett and Dylan (Brylan?) never clicked with fans
Remember these two? Brett was urged to get and date after breaking up with Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) in season 11, and Dylan was the first person who caught her eye. They went on a couple dates, but the notion of Dylan as a placeholder until Brett got back together with Casey was too overpowering to ignore.
It was so obvious, in fact, that the cast felt the same way. Kara Killmer reflected on the short-lived Dylan romance during a recent interview with Deadline, and she admitted to feeling like it was not the best use of the character’s time:
“She dated Dylan and tried to move on and I think everybody was just like, ‘What is this? This will not do.’ No one would accept it, including Sylvie. “
Killmer is not wrong. Brett needed time to refocus her goals, which she ultimately did by the end of the season, but her romance with Dylan felt inessential even in the moment. Fans never got to find out what Dylan’s last name was. We do know he was a part-time magician, though.
Kara Killmer knew Brettsey was the endgame
In the actress’ estimation, Brett was always meant to end up with Casey, and the struggles both the characters experienced along the way were merely instances in which they needed to grow, or learn. Brett and Casey’s happy ending feels earned after seasons of difficulty, and it’s something Killmer is very proud of:
“It’s only appropriate that she would end up with him, which I’m so satisfied with.”
Brett is thriving as she gears up to leave Chicago Fire. She’s going to marry the man of her dreams, she’s the mother of an adopted daughter, and she’s going to pursue his career as a paramedic in Oregon. It all worked out.
We hope Dylan finds what he’s looking for, but we’re glad that him and Brett was a short-lived thing.
